\n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n \nCongratulations to Ludwig Oxford\u2019s Skirmantas Kriaucionis, who received a \u00a3390,000 research grant from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC). Kriaucionis\u2019 studies chemical modifications made to DNA that control the expression of genes and play a critical role in everything from embryonic development to cancer.

\n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n \nLudwig Cancer Research announced today the appointment of Sebastian Nijman as Associate Member of its Oxford Branch. Nijman joins the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research Oxford after several years as a principal investigator at the prestigious Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, where he has developed cutting-edge technologies to explore the molecular interactions by which drugs - and drug candidates - exert their effects within cells. His aim is to apply such novel pharmacogenomic technologies to improve the use of existing cancer drugs and to develop novel therapies, with a special emphasis on breast and lung cancers.

\n\n \n \n \n\n \n \n \nLudwig Oxford researchers, led by Branch Director Xin Lu, have discovered a key mechanism that governs how cells of the epithelia, the soft lining of inner body cavities, shift between a rigid, highly structured and immobile state and a flexible and motile form. Published in the current issue of Nature Cell Biology, their study shows that a tumor suppressor protein named ASPP2 functions as a molecular switch that controls this process and its reverse, both of which play a critical role in a number of biological phenomena, including wound healing, embryonic development and, not least, the metastasis of cancers.
