Research interests

Somatic mutations are crucial in tumorigenesis and offer avenues for non-invasive cancer detection. Liquid biopsy is transforming cancer care by facilitating the non-invasive identification and monitoring of circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) in plasma. Recently, there has been an increased focus in detecting ctDNA mutations in situations with low tumour fractions, such as assessing therapeutic responses or gauging minimal residual disease (MRD). My research centres on employing methylation data (TAPS sequencing) to monitor minimal residual disease and early cancer diagnosis using deep learning. Additionally, I have a keen interest in mutational signatures and the algorithms used to extract them.

Background

I completed my PhD in Computer Science at Trinity College Dublin 2011. After that I’ve worked for 10 years in algorithmic trading and decentralised finance. I’ve always had keen interest in computational cancer research and immunology and finally in 2022 I joined Ben Schuster-Böckler's lab.
