Stanley Ng
Senior Laboratory Manager
Professional Services role
I’m the senior laboratory manager for the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research. I provide operational management for the laboratories, ensuring as smooth and seamless a research environment as possible for the research staff and students. I also have responsibilities for procurement (consumables and service contracts) for the Institute and run tenders as appropriate for capital purchases. I am also the Departmental Safety Officer, Biological Safety Officer and Senior Radiation Protection Supervisor, key safety roles for ensuring that we operate in a safe manner and with due consideration for the environment. I provide advice for general laboratory practices and techniques. I maintain a keen interest in protein purification and method development, mentoring and advising members of the Ludwig on best practise and methodologies in chromatography.
Background
Prior to joining the LICR, I worked for the Structural Genomics Consortium at the University of Oxford for 10 years as their laboratory manager, and before that as a post-doctoral researcher/laboratory engineer in Prof. Udo Oppermann’s group. Before that I worked for Oxford Glycosciences (one of the University of Oxford’s first spin-out companies) for 10 years, holding a variety of production and research roles culminating as a Research Scientist for an Antibody Therapeutics Group. I earned a DPhil from the Nuffield Department of Clinical Medicine in the SGC, with early research on the biochemistry and structural biology of histone demethylases. I hold a Higher National Diploma in Applied Biology (Biotechnology) from the University of the West of England and a NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety.
Other roles
I provide advice and support as required to other NDM units on campus, mentoring laboratory managers. I have formed an informal campus working group of all the major laboratory managers and safety officers, where we can meet and share information.
